The Corleone family, led by Don Vito Corleone, navigates power struggles and betrayal in post-war New York. As Vito resists involvement in the narcotics trade, an assassination attempt leaves him vulnerable, forcing his youngest son, Michael, to retaliate by killing a rival and a corrupt police captain. Fleeing to Sicily, Michael marries but suffers tragic loss. Meanwhile, his brother Sonny is ambushed and murdered. Vito brokers peace, allowing Michael to return and take control of the family.
